“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matt. 11:28-30) The Christian life is compared in Scripture to a walk (Rom. 6:4; 8:1-4; 2 Cor. 5:7; Eph. 4:1). A gentle, compassionate Savior has invited us to walk in intimate relationship with Him throughout the course of our lives. He leads us and nurtures us as we walk in close communion with Him. He is not seeking scholars who can answer every religious question or solve all the biblical riddles. He is not found with those who like to impress themselves and others with their learning. The Savior is a seeker of good and honest hearts whose only desire is to know Him and make Him known to others. Intellectual knowledge is a good thing and can lead to other things that are good, but it is primarily your heart that Jesus is seeking. The apostle said that knowledge “puffs up” but only love can edify (1 Cor. 8:2). God is found with those who are of a broken heart and a contrite spirit. When it comes to your relationship with God, lay your self-sufficient intellect in the dust and embrace by faith who God is and what He wants to do in your life.
Many believers have not understood the nature of the daily walk with Jesus. They do not yet understand that He is as close to them as the mention of His name, standing at the door of the human heart waiting for them to open the door (Rev. 3:20). There is no place the Christian should go without Jesus. There is no thought the Christian should think without Jesus. He should be the center and circumference of all that we do.
It is to those who are wandering aimlessly through life that Jesus comes with His great invitation: “Come to Me all you who labor and are heavy-laden.” Anyone, anywhere, can come to Jesus in humble submission to His will. He is there looking for us to take our place alongside Him. He does not send us out to walk on our own, but reminds us that He will go with us each step of the way (Heb. 13:5; Mt. 28:20).
