the return of christ

(June 14, 2008)

The Return of Christ is something that every Spirit-filled believer looks forward to. All who are trusting in Him should be confident about what will happen when He comes again. “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.” (John 5:24). Christians should be reminded of some things about the Return of our Lord.  It is:

            1. A Reality We Should Easily Acknowledge.  “When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.” (Col. 3:4).  “When He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe, because our testimony among you was believed.”  (2 Thes. 1:10).  “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”  (Jn. 14:3).  Those who deny the Second Coming of Christ—the bodily return of our Savior from heaven—are denying one of the things the Christian faith is built upon.  He is coming again!

            2. A Return We Should Expectantly Await.  Contrary to popular opinion, no one knows when He is coming.  “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.”  (Matt. 24:36).  Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming.” (Matt. 24:42).  We need to stay ready, for we don’t know when His return will be.

            3. A Reward We Should Eagerly Anticipate. His Return is something to look forward to.  “Looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ”  (Titus 2:13).  “Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless.”  (2 Pet. 3:14).  “So Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.” (Heb. 9:28).

Watch and wait!  Look forward to the day when Jesus comes to take us home to be with Him forever.  Nothing will keep you focused on the right things more than the awareness that He is coming again.
